Diamondbacks Crush Orioles in lopsided 9-2 Victory

On Sunday, May 12th, 2024, the Arizona Diamondbacks took on the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Diamondbacks came out swinging and dominated the game from start to finish, winning by a score of 9-2.

The Diamondbacks' offense got on the board early in the first inning. After a leadoff single by center fielder Alek Thomas, third baseman Ketel Marte launched a two-run home run to put Arizona ahead 2-0. The Orioles threatened in the bottom of the inning, but starting pitcher Merrill Kelly escaped a jam with runners on base to preserve the lead.

Arizona added to their lead in the second inning. First baseman Christian Walker lined a double to left field, and designated hitter Pavin Smith drove him in with a single, making the score 3-0. The Diamondbacks continued to chip away at the Orioles' pitching, scoring single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to extend their lead to 6-0.

Merrill Kelly was lights out on the mound for Arizona. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out five Orioles batters. The Baltimore offense struggled to connect with Kelly's pitches, and the Diamondbacks' defense played error-free baseball behind him.

The Orioles finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. With two outs, shortstop Richie Martin hit a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 6-2. However, the Diamondbacks quickly responded in the top of the eighth inning. Catcher Carson Kelly hit a solo home run to push the lead back to 7-2.

The Diamondbacks bullpen came in to close out the game in the later innings. R relievers Noe Ramirez and Ian Kennedy combined for three scoreless innings, allowing only one baserunner. Arizona added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Josh Rojas and an RBI single by Geraldo Perdomo to seal the victory.

The win was a complete team effort for the Diamondbacks. Merrill Kelly earned the win with his strong pitching performance, and the offense provided plenty of run support. Ketel Marte and Carson Kelly led the way with home runs, while the rest of the lineup chipped in with key hits throughout the game.

With the victory, the Diamondbacks improved their record to 38-22, solidifying their position at the top of the National League West. The Orioles, on the other hand, fell to 22-38 and remain in last place in the American League East.
